Cabazon Dinosaurs

I snapped this picture on a cross-country hitchhiking trip in 1973. Turns out, I was capturing the completion of the first of the Cabazon Dinosaurs built at the Cabazon exit off I-10 outside Palm Springs. Dinny (pictured below) is now paired with a T-Rex and is being used by its current owner, Orange County developer Gary Kanter, to promote Creationism–he believes dinosaurs roamed the Garden of Eden with Adam & Eve. Turns out, this isn’t just happening in southern California, where you might expect this kind of thing. It’s happening all over the country. See Ashley Power’s 2005 piece from the Los Angeles Times.
