On its first day open this Wednesday, more than 100 people showed up at the Register Citizen newspaper newsroom cafe on Water Street in downtown Torrington, Conn. They stayed for the coffee, the free wifi and they even attended the morning news meeting with editors. “True community engagement is the holy grail, but you can’t expect the audience to walk into or call your newsroom out of the blue and engage with reporters and editors,” wrote Publisher Matt DeRienzo on the Newsroom Cafe blog. “So we wanted to build a space that was inviting and comfortable, that gave the community other reasons to be there, on their terms, and that provided a continuum of options for influencing and/or contributing to our local news coverage.”
Here’s our post on the Register Citizen’s Ben Franklin Project earlier this year.
